Ward's journey began February 3, 2011 at Springer Mountain, GA. He plans to trek the entire 2,181 mile Appalachian Trail, arriving at Mt. Katahdin, Maine in August 2011. Having a quick look at the map, it looks as if Ward passed thru Pine Grove Furnace State Park PA. There I'm sure he encountered a sign that had equal mileage distance to both the Northern and Southern terminus of the AT. Halfway and still walking with Spring, that's amazing! Ask him if he ate the traditional half gallon of ice cream??? I went on a short 15 mile backpacking trip this weekend in Panthertown Valley(not on the AT but near Cashiers NC). Hiking along with me were a couple of buddies from my 1999 thru hike. Wonderful waterfalls in excess of 80-90 feet. These guys were impressed with Ward's progress as I filled them in on some of his highlights. They all wish him well, as do I. He has a lot of trail to walk, but the worst is behind him now! Ward you can now say goodbye to the Appa-lach-ian Trail and say hello to the Appa-lay-chain as they say in the north. Congrats had keep gettin'it buddy!
ReplyDeleteI read about the half gallon in the guide book, but haven't heard whether or not he took part in the ritual. He stayed in the Free State Park Hostel Saturday night (I thought it was a place for indigents when he mentioned it by phone, but later learned that "Free State" is a nickname for Maryland, created in 1923 by Prohibitionist-supporting sonofabitch from Georgia).
